Articles of Interest It Can Be Done! Homeschooling is a rewarding experience, and homeschooling a special needs learner can be especially satisfying. Many people feel intimidated or overwhelmed at the thought of trying to teach a child with special needs, but it is not altogether different than teaching a child with no apparent learning challenges.
Many of us who have chosen homeschooling as the best option for our children are confronted by people who question whether educational needs and special needs in particular can be best met at home. Although there are times when expert help is needed, there are many advantages and opportunities when teaching at home and these can be shared with those who are skeptical about this educational choice. No one is as familiar with a child as the parents, and this unique relationship is a constant influence on the learning that takes place. By knowing the times of the day when your child is most alert, you can schedule the toughest subjects for that time. Likewise, if he needs frequent breaks and times to rest, you recognize and accommodate it. Your knowledge of your child’s particular needs allows you to customize the school day. When you homeschool your special needs child, you are providing an individualized education. You can hand pick curriculum that fits your child’s learning style and allows him to work in his areas of strength while learning to compensate for weaker areas. You can move at your student’s pace, and spend as much or as little time as needed on each subject area. You can modify the curriculum as needed, since your goal is mastery of the material to the best of your student’s ability. With experience, the homeschooling parent learns how her child responds to instruction and how to meet that child’s needs in ways that are compatible with the family’s lifestyle. The learning successes that are so hard-won are also savored and celebrated by the family. This helps the child to develop an accurate view of himself, acknowledging the struggles while knowing he is valued by God and others. What a great opportunity we have to help our children view themselves and their siblings as God does! Parents, no one knows your child better than you do. No one is more interested than you are in doing what is best for him. You may not know how you’re going to teach all the subjects your child needs to learn over the years. Try and remember that you just need to know enough for what your child is learning now. Your love and commitment will help you pursue the training and support you need, and your investment in teaching your child will bring you both blessings that will convince you it has all been worthwhile.
